The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck

The self-help book for people who hate self-help books. We need to figure out what really matters to us and f*ck the rest.

By Kirsten Barnes

We live in a society where an entire generation expects a gold medal just for showing up. Mark Manson is a blogger who has also written a New York Times bestseller that provides us with a serious reality check. The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck cuts through all the BS and gives you the straight facts.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck isn’t your run-of-the-mill self-help book – this is a book for people who hate self-help books. Many self-help books tell us that we have to be positive, that we have to do certain things to achieve our goals. Mark’s book cuts through all the BS and says it plainly: it’s okay to not be positive all the time.

Life isn’t always sunshine and roses and that’s perfectly okay. Life has become increasingly more overwhelming and if we’re constantly trying to put on happy, positive façades we’re bound to make ourselves truly miserable.

In his book, he speaks about finding the things that really matter to us – f*ck the rest. It’s a counterintuitive approach to living life, but it cuts through all the BS out there. What is really great about this book is that its jam-packed with the honest, raw truth – something that you won’t find very often in today’s society. We’re constantly told that the sky is the limit, and it is, but we need to be aware of our limitations. Placing unnecessary pressure on ourselves isn’t a healthy way of living.

Every human has limitations and society has winners and losers – we can’t all be extraordinary. Mark emphasises that when we identify our limitations and accept them we can move forward. He believes that the secret to improving our lives is not in our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but to learn how to stomach lemons better.

Mark says that once we embrace our fears, faults and uncertainties, and stop running and avoiding tough situations we’ll empower ourselves to start confronting the painful truths. It’s here we’ll find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and the forgiveness we seek.
