We had an interesting discussion in the office, debating the qualities and values of leadership versus management. Much of this centred around the perception of leadership as the ultimate profession and management as being less important.
Yet a company with big vision will get there faster if everyone has leadership skills – confident, inspired, agile and accountable. And leaders also need to be managers – of themselves, but also of the people and resources they have at their disposal.
There is little value in a person who aspires to the leadership crown and dreams of creating strategy, without the capability or commitment to get things done.
Give me “done” before “dreaming” any day, for while dreams are important, done is what gets you there.
