Start Your Year the Right Way

How to kick-off a new year and make the most of this new journey.

By Kirsten Barnes

Towards the end of the year, many of us get that all too familiar feeling of total exhaustion and the end of the year can’t come fast enough. Each new year starts with the same sentiments of a new me and new goals.

It’s the perfect time to take advantage of our natural inclination to set new goals and feel inspired by the rush of positive energy – plan for your future and reflect on your past year.

This guide will get you into the swing of things in no time – rearing to go!

1. LEARN FROM THE PAST & FINISH YOUR TASKS

Maybe 2017 was great and maybe things could have been better, but you need to reflect on last year regardless – the good and the bad. There is something to be learned from every situation and taking this through with you into the new year will help you start off on a positive note.

However, before you can start tackling new tasks you need to complete unfinished tasks – think of it as a spring clean of your to-do list.

2. GIVE YOURSELF CREDIT

To capture your achievements, you need to make a list of everything you achieved throughout the year – big and small. Small achievements are just as important as the big ones.

This exercise helps you realise that you achieved more than you initially thought – it’s easy to forget small victories. Give yourself credit and always remember that your achievements aren’t only work-related.

3. BE REALISTIC

When we grew up we were told to dream big because we could achieve anything we set our minds to. Now, we aren’t saying that you should forget Granny June’s pearls of wisdom, but go about it in a better way.

Break your dreams down into milestones, allowing yourself to achieve certain goals without becoming despondent. Write down your goals and dreams – whether it’s something small like working from home or opening a new branch of your business, break the steps down further and create a game-plan for yourself and start working towards that dream.

4. CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT NURTURES YOUR SUCCESS

More often than not we don’t realise how we are influenced – both negatively and positively. It is important that you cut out or eliminate the negative influences in your life as they will hold you back. Consider what your working environment is like – is it bland and boring or does it energise you? These small changes can make a world of difference.

5. FIND A MENTOR

In the workplace today you’ll find a mixture of people, some who exude more confidence than others and those who chase top positions even if their experience is less. But, there is nothing wrong with learning from the people at the top and from their experiences. A mentor is there to give you insight and guidance when you feel as though you don’t know which path to take.

6. MAKE YOURSELF A PRIORITY

As the age-old saying goes – you can’t help others until you can help yourself, we are reminded that we should be at the top of our list. We need to push ourselves to achieve our goals and become better at what we do. These improvements don’t only have to be business related – you can aim to be a better partner, parent, friend or boss, don’t limit yourself.

If you think about your dreams, what do you see in them? Who are you with? How are you living? Define the lifestyle you want to live and find ways to achieve it.
