Siko Republik was started in 2018 and it designs, manufactures, and sells to local and international markets.
Over the years the brand has grown tremendously. Siko Republik has gained popularity and was worn by Miss SA’s top finalists, Big Brother 3 contestants and many other celebrities.
Wearing clothes that resonate with her African heritage is important to Jabulile Gwala the founder of Siko Republik. She believes her brand instils a sense of pride and connects people to their roots.
As a Zulu girl that was born and bred in Katlehong township in Soweto, Jabulile only truly connected with her roots when she moved to KwaZulu Natal to further her studies.
KwaZulu’s Natal’s rich and vibrant heritage inspired her to learn more about her culture and this is where she fell in love with the Nguni print aesthetic that now features strongly in her designs.
“I was an active child that loved playing in the streets and when I wanted to be active again as a young adult, I didn’t find gym wear that resonated with me,” she said. When she could not find Nguni inspired active wear, she saw this as a business opportunity to start her own brand for people like her.
Today her small business idea has grown into a successful business that is creating jobs and dominating the fashion athleisure sector.
